I love a great phrase, a turn of words that neatly and succinctly captures an idea or emotion or concept. Having grown up in Wyoming, where words are few and far between, and you need to listen the first time, I heard a lot of phrases that are still part of my thinking.
“All hat and no cows.” – pretty self explanatory.
“It’ll get better before you get married.” – wellllll…
“Still on the right side of the sod.” – response to “how are you?”.
My all time favorite, however, that has shaped my thinking about jobs, teams, and faith is that “you ride for the brand.” When you sign on for something, you behave with loyalty and dedication, with the best interest of the outfit, as long as their name is at the bottom of your paycheck. When you can no longer support or be loyal or dedicated, you need to move on.
The most important part about that kind of mentality is to be very, very particular about where you sign on, about Whose brand you ride for.
“Choose you this day whom you will serve…as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15
