Slow Down

Stuff wears out or breaks and needs to be replaced. That was the case recently when, upon unloading the dishwasher, we found the glass coffee carafe for our coffee maker had a big hole in the side of it. We discovered this when we tried to fill it up and it became the never ending refill. We were able to find a replacement carafe and get it ordered. (Note here. By “we” I mean my husband in most of these sentences.)

The replacement arrived and went instantly into use. Lovely! But this carafe was slightly different from the one we had replaced. The pouring lid had a bit different shape such that if you poured too fast, like you were refilling as the hordes were coming through the front door, you’d end up with coffee spilled all over the counter. This was a “pandemic model” carafe. To use it correctly you had to sloooooow down. Pour gently as if executing a butterfly landing. Use that extra time to think up descriptive ways to describe what goes on for your blog perhaps.

So often we are in such a hurry, we execute poorly (or pourly as the case may be). We create more work for ourselves or others. We miss out on beauty, nuance, subtle relationship signals, or even blatant signals.

Who really needs a fifteen second pour anyway? There is so much to savor.
