Enough

As you can tell by some of my blogs, I am occasionally stunned or surprised or just sitting over here minding my own business rolling my eyes and laughing at what I see on social media (see previous blog). It must be the season where instead of thinking about what they are writing, the social media influencers, i.e., people paid to think up posts, are thinking about pie and turkey and cookies. It’s the only explanation. That’s the only kind explanation since I wonder about many posts throughout the year.

Today’s winner in the “what the heck” category is a post that starts out “It’s not good enough that you’re a good grandparent.” This is from a post by a faith based nonprofit group dedicated to grandparenting.

So what am I supposed to be doing and how is “good enough” measured? And who is doing the measuring? How can I get into the top ten of grandparents? When did being a grandparent become a competitive activity?

In a world full of guilt and disquiet and grandparents who are called upon to raise their grandchildren, we don’t really need this. God is in charge. We can pray for our grandchildren, we can often speak truth to them that their parents can’t, we can love them, we can model God’s grace to them, we can overfeed them cookies and grapes (just a different form of Communion), we have lots of ways to love on them.

Being told we are not good enough is not ok. We all do the best we can in the circumstances we find ourselves. And trust God with it all.
