Sometimes I wonder how I have ended up where I am, either in a specific situation or just in life generally. Sometimes I wonder, usually either in horror or in amazement, how someone else has ended up where they are.
I heard a sermon a number of years ago creating an analogy of sin to how sheep get where they are not supposed to be one nibble at a time. I think that is also often true for a variety of other circumstances in which we find ourselves, not just sin.
However, sheep also are easily startled, and will individually and collectively bolt. Something as seemingly harmless as a bird rising up from the ground to fly off will send a flock into a frenzy of blind panic that can end badly. All it takes is for one to bolt to get the entire flock to flee.
Sometimes paths in life are deliberately and thoughtfully chosen and followed. Other times they are nibbled into with little planning other than the next mouthful. And sometimes they are found by running around waving our hands in the air and screaming.
When we stay close to Jesus, the Good Shepherd, and listen for and obey His voice we will find ourselves where we are meant to be.
