Comfort

Ahhhh…the little things.

Lots of folks think that if only they would win the Lottery, or be able to take an around the world trip, or do something heroic that then they would be happy and content.

I think happiness is overrated.  Comfort – that’s a different thing altogether.  Like dryer-warm pre-jammies.  Mmmmmmm.

Side note: for those of you who are unaware, pre-jammies are those sweats, t-shirts, etc. that you wear between coming home from work or school and going to bed.  They are also known – particularly on weekends – as post-jammies.  They generally should NOT be worn outside the house although on occasion, when I want to see someone I haven’t seen in a long time, I wear them to the grocery store or to the local Target.

So back to dryer-warm pre-jammies.  In winter I especially love the warmth and comfort of dryer-warm pre-jammies.  Now it’s not always comforting to have to haul myself down to the basement where the dryer resides to warm up my pre-jammies.  I have found however, that if I throw my pre-jammies on the floor in front of the heat vent while I brush my teeth that I can get the equivalent in a very short amount of time and with very little effort.  Which in the morning is very comforting.

This morning my dryer-warm pre-jammies got me to thinking about other things that bring me comfort.  Things that I store up and surprise myself with.  Including things that just sort of make me giggle.

  • Peanut butter and honey on toast.
  • Daffodils
  • The smell of garden herbs like basil and rosemary
  • Fuzzy socks
  • Hugs.  Real hugs – like the kind you get from a young grandchild
  • Shelter.  This one is a bit hard to explain but I find it in the strength of my husband – it is that safe place where you can relax in protection
  • Being called “momma” by my grown-up children.  Especially when it is in the form of “I miss you momma”.  (Now why that one brings me comfort I have no idea.)
  • The deliciousness of well-prepared and beautifully delivered words
  • Ginger snap cookies
  • Hooting owls
  • Running water
  • The eTrade and Capital One commercials – you know the talking baby and the barbarians

So, with apologies to the Capital One barbarians, what’s in your wallet?  What always brings an “Mmmmmm” to you?

One response to “Comfort

  1. I really have been thinking of ways I experience comfort.
    These are so far:
Bacon–both its aroma cooking, & its incredible taste. With almost everything.
Coffee –ditto: the aroma of the beans being ground, plus its rich taste–IF it’s really good & fresh coffee.
    Cinnamon. Aroma. Oh yes.
I realize these selections have a theme: senses. I am indeed very sensual.
    mms
