Chaos or Light

The past several years have seemed full of chaos and turmoil as all sorts of different “revealings” have unfolded:

– human trafficking revealed in part by efforts of International Justice Mission, Truckers Against Trafficking, and other such organizations

– the plight of refugees worldwide revealed by the work of Preemptive Love, Doctors Without Borders, and others

– sexual abuse often decades old and sadly, including but certainly not limited to, within the church

– racial divides and discrimination at all levels of society

– sexual exploitation in all of its variety of forms umbrellaed by #MeToo

– economic hoarding where inequities leave those at the margins of society trapped by rules and laws and whirlpools of escalating debt

The list goes on. It seems as if no sooner does one travesty and tragedy gain our attention, there is yet another. The swirling of one evil after another is overwhelming. Is our world becoming worse and worse?

Or are we seeing a different kind of world, a different tipping point where the powerless are being given a voice? Where we cannot be ignorant of or ignore the seamy chaotic underbelly of life. Perhaps we are not tipping into more and more chaos but rather light is shining into and onto the darkness of chaos.

Hope, not as something wished for but rather as something expected and worth striving towards, is possible and exists.

Hope as the Light of the World enters the dark and dirty parts of who we are and what we are, and buys us back for what we were meant to be.

Come Lord Jesus, come.
