What Did Mary Know?

This week, I was reminded of the Miracle at the Wedding in Cana, Jesus’ first recorded miracle as He started His ministry. The narrative says that Mary saw that the wine had run out at the wedding that she, along with Jesus and His disciples, was attending in Cana. This would have been a gigantic, humiliating misstep. Mary goes to Jesus and makes sure He knows what’s happened. He replies that it’s not His time yet. She just nods and tells the servants to do what He tells them. Jesus tells them to fill the water jars. Each one held about 30 gallons or so. The servants do so, and voila! The water is now wine. Not only is it wine, but it is better wine than anything that’s already been served.

So the question I have this week, is “what did Mary know?” Why did she think of going to Jesus to solve this problem for this family? Why was she so sure that He could do something that she told the servants to do whatever He told them? What had she seen over the last thirty years?

None of these are answerable questions because we have no record. What we do know is that Mary believed, had always believed, that Jesus was the Son of God. Her God was incredibly big and powerful. Yet the assurance she had that He, and Jesus, cared about even the small things in life is pretty audacious.

What do I believe about God? About Jesus? About the Holy Spirit? About Their love? Especially their love for me and those I care about?
