Fulfillment

The Advent season is a bit of liminal time, in between space where we have acknowledged our need for God, and we rely on His promises as we look forward to celebrating and remembering His fulfillment of those promises.

This past year has been busy for my husband and me. It has had additions, losses, travel, grief, joy, hope and a myriad of other activities, emotions, and what have you. We had two very different kinds of waiting this year in which we knew what we were waiting for, not unlike Advent. We waited to welcome two new granddaughters. Joy filled with shopping. And after authorizing hospice, we had a different kind of waiting with my Mom. Sorrow filled with memories.

As Dan and I entered Advent, the season of waiting, we realized we needed to be purposeful about how and with what we fill this waiting. Our tendency is to fill to the full this time with activities, often covering over spaces that are tender and painful. What we need is to hold the space and time for God to fill us to the full, fulfill in us all He has promised. That isn’t easy. And if it isn’t easy for us, I can only imagine how difficult it is for people who are not retired and mostly just doing as they please!

So we are looking for the interstitial spaces in which we can just breathe and rest. We look for the God winks that remind us to let Him fill our lives first.

We remember all His promises are “Yes” and “Amen”.
