Stewardship is one of those rather oldish words that has fallen out of fashion. Many of us are at least vaguely familiar with a steward if for no other reason than Faramir and Boromir’s father was a steward. I’m not sure any of us want to emulate him. Shudder.
But stewardship is actually at the heart of what we are called to do as followers of Jesus. We care for and protect and use wisely what belongs to another, and has been entrusted to us.
We can be stewards of many things. Some are stewards of financial resources, which is probably the most common thing that springs to mind in a discussion of stewardship. As parents we are stewards of our children overseeing their development, protecting them, and then releasing or giving them back to God.
When you do inventory of your life, what do you recognize as something entrusted to you to be stewarded? What do you believe you have earned yourself, and therefore are not stewarding for God?
Worth a ponder. You might be surprised if you chase the gift back far enough. Are you stewarding well and what does that even look like to you?
