In the Old Testament, kings and nobles went into war with an armor bearer. Armor for war was heavy and one of the functions of an armor bearer was to help put on the armor. Putting on your own armor would have been very difficult.
Ephesians 6 describes the Armor of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation, the shoes of the Gospel of Peace, the shield of faith, the sword of the Spirit and of course, prayer. Paul exhorts believers to put on this armor as protection in spiritual warfare.
Today, we each need an armor bearer who helps us put on the Armor of God, who reminds us of truth and righteousness and salvation, who walks peace with us, joins shields of faith in protection, reminds us of God’s word. But most of all one who prays with and for us. And we each need to BE an armor bearer.
I find this mutual serving to be extremely important in my marriage. As my husband and I walk together, we are to live out the important role of an armor bearer for the other, because not only does an armor bearer help put on the Armor of God, an armor bearer is loyal, extremely trustworthy, courageous, and willing to lay down their life.
Lord God, show me who I am to be an armor bearer for, and especially help me do that well for my husband.
