Last weekend we had the privilege of attending one of our granddaughter’s choir concerts. Ordinarily they are held in gigantic school gyms or perhaps a lunchroom. This was not an ordinary concert however! It was held in a beautiful cathedral in the downtown area of our city.
Acoustics in the cathedral are stunning. “Drag” on the end of a song runs to 5 or 6 seconds. You can hear every note. The choirs were exceptional and this was a fabulous opportunity for the students to sing where professional choirs sing in a space built for sound.
The cathedral is built to evoke a sense of reverence and these singers behaved as such. All around them were stained glass windows depicting Bible stories and saints of the Christian faith.
As I sat there enjoying all this, I was reminded of the words in Hebrews about being surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV
Who has been a witness to you? Who has modeled a life of faith in such an attractive way that you were compelled to seek to live life in a similar way?
Who are you a witness for? It isn’t just children that watch and mimic – it is others who draw their initial view of Jesus from the behavior of professed believers.
Are you part of the great crowd of witnesses? Or part of the crowd throwing stones?
Always excited to see these and this one was exceptional. Thanks
