Wild

I’m a creature of habit. I like things a certain way and I have to really push myself to try something new or even just different. Because I’m very aware of this characteristic, I also try to be conscious of WHY I am saying no to something. Often my “no” is an assessment of how in control I might be. Or quite frankly the comfort I take in knowing exactly how my coffee is going to taste.

I also tend to opt for safe over alive. Now that seems like a ridiculous statement. What I mean by alive is better described as aware and engaged. Delighted. Challenged. Lots of thesaurusically based descriptions here.

There is a wild, crazy notion throughout Scripture that yielding your ENTIRE life to God is the way to go. That has been a struggle for me especially in some areas. Do I really trust Him?

In C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, the children ask if Aslan is a safe lion to which the Beavers incredulously reply “Safe? Oh no but He is good.” There is a wildness about our God that calls to us, that challenges us, to live under His wild shelter. It is a good place to be but it will be a place of challenge and adventure unlike anything we know or can imagine.

When He tells the story, when I step back and turn loose of the itinerary and the control, it is wild.

And good.
