Spectators

Around the world, people love to watch activities and events from a grandchild’s talent show to professional sports to movies. We cheer and groan about what happens – or doesn’t happen. We talk about the event and analyze it and often critique individual performances.

But we don’t participate in any manner: we certainly aren’t front and center as one of the stars. We aren’t a coach or a director or a stage manager or a groundskeeper. We don’t sell beer or popcorn or tickets. We don’t even direct the parking.

We watch.

But what if an opportunity to participate came our way?! Would we take it? We could be part of the action, part of the activity? How much different would our account of that activity be if we were part of it in some way? Especially if it’s a winning team or an award winning play.

We do have that opportunity as part of the church to involve ourselves in The Greatest Story, the story of God’s love and redemption and defeat of sin and death. Yet it is SO easy to dismiss the opportunities that come our way: I can’t preach, I can’t sing, it’s easier to watch.

God wants us as part of the team, the crew, the community. Actively engaged in living and telling about His love, actively worshipping and praising.

Not just watching.

How do you engage with your fellowship, your community of fellow believers, your church? Or are you just a spectator?
