During this season of Lent, the stories of Jesus’ last week before His crucifixion are highlighted. This morning’s reading was about Jesus’ prediction of Judas’ betrayal. Jesus does not explicitly call out Judas but leaves things rather open ended.
While we as readers know the culprit, those at the table don’t. Well, Jesus knows and really so does Judas. But the others are left a bit puzzled. Judas is one of them, a friend. The reading suggested each of them was wondering if they were the one Jesus was referring to.
Each of us in our own way has a bit of Judas in us. None of us are perfect in any of our relationships, including our relationship with Lord Jesus. But if I’m honest, the Judas in me isn’t wondering if Jesus is referring to me when He says someone at the table will betray Him. I’m too busy in my pride making unfounded accusations about everyone else. “Jesus must be talking about Matthew. You know he’s never really been honest. Or maybe it’s one of those fishermen. Yea, that must be it. One of them.”
This would be when a mirror would be helpful.
