In gatherings of Christians it is not unusual to hear people talk about their “calling” from God, what it is God would have them do. Generally my experience has been those spoken-about callings are pretty amazing and certainly require God’s help and often intervention to be realized. No one particularly wants to have a small calling.
It’s not unlike someone who wants to rescue ALL the abandoned dogs. One is not enough! They ALL need homes. And petted. And tummy skritches. All of them. That’s a pretty big calling.
I would argue however that there are no small callings with God. In the Gospels, Jesus tells the Parable of the Lost Sheep: “if a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost?”
Sometimes we are to go find The Hundreth. We are sent to bring back one of God’s flock, to rescue them, to mentor them, to care for them, to disciple them.
Are we willing to do this, to go after The Hundreth? It’s not grand and glorious. In fact it may be drudgery. There will not be large crowds or recognition. We will not probably have wealth.
We will be, however, obedient which is God’s measure of success. Are you willing to be faithful in a seemingly small thing?
