What’s in Your Heart?

Then the Jewish leaders led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jewish leaders did not enter the palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.” – John 18:28

How ironic. The Jewish leaders would not enter the palace in order to avoid ceremonial uncleanness so they could participate in the Passover, a remembrance of deliverance from slavery.

Yet the very actions they were engaging in by seeking Jesus’ death had already made them unclean. Those very actions were trapping them in a slavery of their own devising.

Open my eyes Lord to see my self-righteousness and rule-following, my rituals of purity, and my use of those to rationalize and blind me to my uncleanness. The very things that keep me in slavery to sin.
