This morning our pastor was talking with a group about an underlying philosophy of the children’s and youth ministries at our church. He mentioned research that examined what kept kids raised in the church from fleeing the church as they became adults. The results of the research were surprising to the researchers: connection with caring Christian adults in addition to their parents was the key factor.
Quite frankly I was not terribly surprised. Having spent my entire career in higher education, the research on student retention says that a meaningful connection with faculty or staff improves retention significantly.
Not programs. Not creative crafts. Not good storytelling. Not fascinating assignments. Not well-funded research. Connection.
We are created for connection. Healthy relationships that both comfort and challenge us. The Bible talks about “iron sharpening iron” and that “two are better than one”.
Ultimately, our best and greatest connection is with God. We learn about connection through others who model Godly albeit imperfect relationships but we are created for connection with our Maker.
Who connects with you and shows you God? Who do you connect with and show God to? If we want to continue the generational legacy, connecting with others is required.
