That’s always been the allure: the inside scoop. The secret handshake, the inside joke, the special, privileged knowledge (only $19.99!), being part of “The Club”.

It started in The Garden: “God didn’t tell you the whole sssstory! Lisssssten to me. I know a ssssssecret.” It shows up into the New Testament with Gnosticism, which in a nutshell says “Jesus is not enough, there’s a secret something that I know to complete your faith.”

Right into today’s conspiracy theories and speculative sound bites and clickbait headlines. “I know something you don’t know. It’s been hidden from the public. You are all being lied to. Only those of us who are really aware and smart and informed know. Come be one of us.”

The desire to be included, to be special, to be accepted. We long to belong. So we chase outrage and sidebars and “facts” that only the elite are privy to.

All while God scans the horizon for us to come home from wallowing in the pigsty of sin and yearning and looking for love in all the wrong places. He’s waiting for our hearts to come home.

Where we belong.
