Work Week

First let me be transparent: I’ve been retired from the workforce for a few years. But I spent at least part of every year since I was fourteen engaged in some kind of paid job. Before that? Well, I grew up on a ranch, so yeah, unpaid jobs unless you count breakfast.

This week, a news article about the, may I say, INSANE work requirements of Goldman Sachs was reported. People are crying out to cut their 100 HOURS per week back to only 80 hours per week. I am confounded beyond speaking. What chains hold someone to a job with those kind of expectations?

I’d love to believe this situation is an anomaly but I know it is not. The anomaly, apparently, is that the employees are actually requesting a reduction from absurdly ridiculous to still ridiculous.

We are created with the need for rest, especially for God’s rest. When we place a priority on wealth, career, or anything else over what God has designed us for we are engaged in idolatry.

And before I get too snotty self-righteous about the business world, I need to examine my own life and household for idols, for the things I have used to replace God’s gifts and best for me. Humbling.
