The invitation is clear. Come close. Scoot over. Be near. Breathe deep this love, the characteristic smell.
Holding close a newly arrived baby brings a distinctive smell. Heavenly fresh. A toddler that has spent the day outside running and laughing smells of sunshine (and sometimes of the need for a fresh diaper).
My dad always smelled like hard work, cuss words, and practical love. I can’t tell you what that smell is but I’d know it in a minute if I smelled it again. My grandfather always smelled like hay and wintergreen Life Savers.
But the only way to enter into any of those memories or reminders was/is to scoot over close. To enter a personal circle. To share space.
We are invited to “scoot over” next to Jesus. He came with the mantle of one of us, He became human so we can come close. He delights in being close to us, to pointing things out to us by kneeling down so His outstretched arm is along our line of sight. Close enough to smell.
Breathe deep the love of God. Scoot over. Curl in close.
