Big Things, Little Things

I love the panache of my grandchildren. They all have the blessing of living in families of various shapes and sizes that encourage them to think, explore, make mistakes, love, argue, and learn. And be slightly feral, in honor of their Nana.

As a grandparent, I have the luxury and joy of watching them grow and mature. They all have their own path and speed which I don’t feel any need to fuss over. The immediacy of anguish for the three year old has become more tempered in the sixteen year old, as the source of anguish has also changed. Lack of access to candy vs lack of access to cell phone do tend to elicit similar responses however different the expression.

In some ways, being one of the “older generation” now has also given me the freedom to watch the growth and change of those around me (and sometimes the regression). This particular election season is touted as being more divisive, more critical, more damaging, more of just about everything, than any before. Certainly, our world as we have experienced it to date has not faced this variety of “Look At Me’s”.

But what does that really mean? More importantly, what should it mean.

On this day after the US election, what I know is that God is still in charge, this world is still not my home, and I’m still supposed to love others as Jesus loves me. That’s all. That’s enough.
