Distraction

I am a big fan of silence. I don’t generally turn on the radio when I drive or listen to music when I work. Yet I am frequently distracted even in silence. The cacophony of the world sneaks in around the edges and then blasts a hedge of brass instruments and percussion.

It starts off with the trumpets of panic just to get my full attention. The tubas of doom along with the timpani of impending disaster lay the foundation for the bells of squirreling along with the snare drums of elevated heartbeat. Before I know it I’m in a full orchestra of overwhelmed. The pandemic, the bank account, the election (which apparently has an entire snare drum section all its own), the wildfires, extinction of animals and plants I didn’t even know existed, deaths of friends and loved ones of friends. Who the hell wrote this score?!

Tune my ears dear God to Your quiet voice. Silence the cacophony of this world, the distractions from Who is in control. Focus my eyes on the One Who loves me. Soften my heart to hear Your songs of joy.
