Since my early twenties, I have needed some type of correction to my eyesight in order to see the world crisply and not as blurry, distorted chaos. I’ve had glasses, contact lenses, LASIK surgery, and as I’ve grown older, reading glasses. Progressive lenses, which are the new bifocals, have been recommended to me but I’ve resisted. I’d rather take my glasses on and off, or peer over the top of them, apparently.
I remember as a child trying on my grandmother’s glasses, and laughing about how distorted everything looked. It must be a grandchild rite of passage because my own grandchildren have done the exact same thing with my glasses.
Using lenses to view the world is not just limited to physical sight. We all tend to view the world through lenses over our minds and/or hearts. If we choose lenses of anger or suspicion, we will see a scary, defeating world. If we choose lenses of God’s love and hope, we will see something rather different. The good news is we can change which lenses we use, if we recognize we need to do so.
Open my eyes, Lord.
