Inside Outside

Sitting outside in the morning is one of my joys, especially if I’m out before the noises of busyness begin. The road noise, the talking, and especially the lawnmower noise! Some days it is not possible to be outside: snow, cold, gale force winds, rain. On those days it is very clear my Bible and other quiet time materials will not survive.

Other days it’s difficult to tell. For example, today is very overcast and thunderstorms are predicted. My weather app is in lightning mode. However, it isn’t yet raining. So I take a chance. I head outside, sit down, start reading, and then I notice tiny drops of water. Rats, it’s starting to rain. So I go back inside, get settled in my glider. After a bit, however, I don’t hear rain so I check again. Nope not raining, so I move back outside. I no more than get settled and there they are again. Tiny raindrops. Will the heavens open up and pour on me? That’s a real possibility. Will the rain continue to mess with me? That’s also a real possibility. So I go back inside and just open a window.

The “in-no out-no in” pattern is not unlike trying to let a cat outside. Maybe I’m going, maybe I’m not. How about if I just straddle the doorway?

That pattern can also be how my faith walk looks. All in with Jesus. Nope going to play it worldly safe. But the Spirit of the living God resides in me! Well I’ll just open the window from this comfortable place and let a little bit seep in so I can feel like I’m living the wild outdoor life. Or I’ll play cat and straddle both being neither hot nor cold.

Lord keep me to the wide open spaces with You! Oh and also please give me a raincoat.
