Markers

We recently visited Death Valley National Park. I was quite surprised to find it very different from the Sahara-esque picture I have always had of it. The landscape and the history were quite intriguing. Even the names of the places in the park caused one to wonder “what’s the story there”.

One of those names is Stovepipe Wells Village. The name comes from Stovepipe Wells which was a water hole in the middle of the sand dunes at the junction of two trails. The sand kept drifting and obscuring it, so someone inserted a length of stovepipe as a marker for thirsty travelers. For summer travelers, when the heat is way over a 100 all day everyday, the stovepipe marked life.

What are the “stovepipes” in your life? Where do you find restoration and renewal in your own Death Valley? What markers do you look for to bring you to living water?

Lord, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water.” – Jeremiah 17:13
