Just Ask

For several years, my husband and I have vacationed and renewed at the same place, spending time in the same little town. We stay on the north side of town away from the noise but within walking distance of the shops. One of our almost daily activities is to walk the mile or so into town usually to the bakery and occasionally the grocery.

It’s often fairly hot at least compared to where we live. My husband got in the habit of stopping at a small ice cream/gelato shop and getting a cone. I never even went in the the shop; they are all open air so that’s not quite as standoffish as it might seem. Ice cream and my digestive system do NOT get along, so what was the point. I’ll be honest, there was some green-eyed envy going on while he ate that delicious cold treat!

This year I wandered in with him. After they served him, they asked what I would like. I told them nothing and offhandedly mentioned “no leche” – no milk. The woman behind the counter immediately pointed out their sorbets! A whole line of cartons with delightful and delicious names: Naranja, Te Verde, Mango, Limon, Mora and more!

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, Who does not change like shifting shadows…You do not have because you do not ask God. – James 1:17, 4:2b

How often I have missed out because I did not ask. I was afraid, I assumed an incorrect answer, I thought I already knew, I thought I didn’t need help.

While James probably wasn’t talking about icy cold deliciousness, how often do we miss out because we do not ask God. We do not seek our Father’s love either directly from Him or from Him through our Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you – Matthew 7:7

Ask for the sorbet!
