So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. – II Corinthians 4:18
This past weekend, my daughters Naomi and Kara met up with me at Folly Beach, South Carolina. It was the opening weekend of the FIFA 2019 Women’s World Cup and we gathered to gorge on the beautiful game.
We had a fabulous time together which was topped from by an early birthday gift from them: a harbor sailing cruise. I’ve never been sailing before so I was intrigued and excited. It was interesting to watch the focus of the captain as he took us out and then back. He knew where his eyes were fixed and what he saw but I did not.
As we sailed, I noticed pelicans flying and also swimming. As they flew, they watched closely and then would dive straight down into the water. They were fishing! I couldn’t see what they were focused on, but they were often successful.
Often I am not able to fix my eyes on the unseen. That seems impossible. Yet when I fix the eyes of my heart on what is now unseen in this world, I find the hope of what is promised to come. Safe harbor. Plenty.
