Important Quantities

ED1D22EF-01D6-41F7-96F6-12795228632BThis morning’s quick headline scan hit my “wait” button. Generally that scan tends towards “more of the same, more of the same, how many times can we hash and re-hash the same stuff, don’t care, not sure this is news”- you get the idea. Occasionally, though the “wait” button hits and my curiousity is peaked.

This morning’s hit came courtesy of The Costa Rican Times which often has interesting takes on US news. This one however was not a US news take:

Police Operations in Puntarenas Confiscate Important Quantities of Drugs

So why did this hit my “wait” button? Well what qualifies as an “Important Quantity”? Is there an “Unimportant Quantity”?

Talk about situational definitions. I’m still not really sure how that distinction is made by the Costa Rican police or if they even made that distinction. Maybe it is a generally understood distinction locally. Don’t really know.

But it did cause me to reflect on “important quantities” in my life. And “unimportant quantities”. And where is the tipping point, how does something go from being an “unimportant quantity” to being an “important quantity”?

When I retired from my last job, two things reached “important quantity” levels: money and BS. For both, the “important quantity” that caused a change was “enough” – enough money to retire and enough BS. At that intersection, it was time.

But “enough” is pretty non-specific. How many in “enough”? Same as “important quantity”? What is an “important quantity” of stars in the night sky? Churros for breakfast? FaceTime messages from a grandchild? Hand-holding with my beloved?

Some “important quantities” make headlines. Some make heart-lines.
