Readers

pexels-photo-207662.jpegOne of the things I am now able to do as a “retired person” is go to a great water exercise class. There are a lot of us retirees there on the MWF mornings I go. I’m impressed by the dedication and perseverance exhibited and quite frankly by the willingness to wear a swimsuit! Bravo!

There are folks I see regularly: the lane swimmer in a full wetsuit; the swimmer who wears a very lovely track suit in which to swim; the lady with the ball cap who seems to know everyone and be known by everyone but never actually takes any classes.

And then there is the reader. There is always one. Just one. At first I thought it was just a specific person who came in his swim trunks and read by the lane pool where the water aerobics class is held. But today, he was replaced by a woman who sat in her swimsuit reading by the pool. They are very nice about answering people’s questions, I assume about what they are reading and if it is well-written.

A pool-reader partnership between the library and the rec center is certainly a novel way to increase literacy. Rent-a-reader. I wonder if they have a Speedo contract?
