Debt

Recently in the Wall Street Journal there is an article by Margot Patrick about jet-set debt collectors who, and I quote, “hunt the super rich”. Their jobs are to recover assets not dissimilar to what is more commonly known as the job of a “repo man”. Who woulda thought?

I’ve always assumed, even though I know better, that the super rich were super rich because they managed their money well rather than through some quirky turn of events coupled with the luck of the Irish. Apparently, some of them aren’t necessarily super rich, they just use credit excessively well, or they ignore their bills. Or something else that I would need to become super rich in order to understand. I’m not opposed to being super rich, it is just highly unlikely to occur and probably wouldn’t be good for me anyway.

The fact that there is a career option as a jet-set debt collector is both fascinating and sobering.  It speaks rather loudly to the assumption that those who have will have more. But will they keep it?

We never know what goes on behind closed doors or behind closed bank accounts. What appears to be, may not be.

Am I envious of an empty shell?
