Visitation

This summer my yard has been an extended-stay for cardinals. A lot of cardinals. I love to catch sight of them through the greenery in the backyard and appreciate their bug control activities.

Folk lore says they are departed loved ones visiting. While I’m not sure about that, if it is true, I’ve had a yard full of spirits this summer. And while, as I said, I’m not sure about the veracity of that piece of folk lore, I do enjoy the thought it might be true.

Whether it is true or not, the cardinals do cause me to stop and think about those who have gone before me. My dad, Aunt Pat, grandparents, rainbow grandchildren, friends, etc.  In general, there is a gentle longing and some smile-inducing memory that goes along with that remembrance although some also bring to mind “what if”.

I am also reminded – especially with my dad and my Aunt Pat – of those qualities and characteristics that made them who they were while here and their legacy. Their legacy for me is often a guide in difficult situations. And just in everyday living.

My prayer is that after I go Home, the cardinals remind those still soujorning here  that they were loved by me, that I respected their dignity, and of some quality or characteristic worth adopting. May they be assured of seeing me again because we all serve a risen King.

May that prayer guide my journey here.
